Health insurance for returning Canadians

Health insurance for returning Canadians at a glance

  • For Canadians returning to Canada
  • Covers medical expenses not reimbursed by a provincial health insurance plan
  • Insured amounts from $100,000 to $300,000
  • Lower insurance premiums when you choose a deductible
  • Can be purchased even after you return to Canada

If you are a Canadian returning home after a long stay abroad, assurancevoyages.ca can help you find the best health insurance solution for your needs.

You are considered an inpatriate if you are not covered by a provincial health insurance plan such as RAMQ because you have spent more than 183 days of a single year outside your home province.

Generally speaking, you must wait three months after returning to Canada for your provincial health insurance coverage to resume. You must pay out-of-pocket for any expenses incurred during the waiting period.

Lower your insurance premium with a deductible

To save on your health insurance coverage, you can choose a deductible ranging from $500 to $10,000.

In the event of a claim, the insurer will subtract the amount of your deductible from the amount reimbursed.

Speak to a representative for more information about deductibles.

Get insured even after you've arrived

You can still purchase insurance if you're already home.

However, some insurers may require a waiting period of 2 to 7 days before you can make a claim.

Speak to a representative at 1-855-309-5888 if this situation applies to you and to request an insurance quote.

Talk to one of our representatives if...

  • Before arriving in Canada, you had a health problem or illness (also called a pre-existing illness)
  • In spite of a pre-existing illness, your health is stable and does not prevent you from travelling
  • You have already returned to Canada and do not have insurance
